Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho begs Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini to cut holidays short

DESPERATE Jose Mourinho has begged his Manchester United players to cut short their holidays and help the team.

United have failed to win a single game in pre-season and were thumped 4-1 by Liverpool on Saturday in the International Champions Cup.

Many of Mourinho’s squad are finally enjoying a break from football having played an entire season and World Cup.

Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini are all away having reached the final and semi-final of the tournament with France, England and Belgium respectively.

Pogba, Lukaku and Fellaini are in Beverly Hills while Lingard is resting in Miami.

Three Lions pair Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones are set to report to Carrington this week to get match fit for the new season.

Mourinho has urged his other holidaying stars to follow their example.

He said: “I hope that the boys on deserved holidays take care of themselves a bit and that somebody wants to do what Rashford and Phil Jones decided to do, which is to be back a bit earlier to try to help the team because for the beginning of the season we are going to be in trouble.”

Ashley Young ignored Mourinho’s plea to return from holiday after his boss sent out an SOS last week.

United finish their tour of America with a friendly against Real Madrid in Miami on Wednesday before flying to Germany to face Bayern Munich in their final game on Sunday.

Ander Herrera slammed the club’s pre-season schedule by comparing it to the hectic Christmas period.

Injuries to Nemanja Matic and Antonio Valencia have added further strain to players having to over-exert themselves before the campaign has even kicked off.

Mourinho has hit out at the board for not buying him enough new players.

United have signed £52m Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, £19m Diogo Dalot from Porto and Stoke’s second-choice keeper Lee Grant.

Mourinho – now favourite to become the first managerial casualty of the season – moaned: “I would like to have two more players. I think I am not going to have two, it is possible I’m going to have one.

“I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago and I wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players.

“If it is not possible we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have.”

Why it’s time to finally give Sergio Aguero the credit he deserves

Dream Team FC
Why it’s time to finally give Sergio Aguero the credit he deserves

It’s impossible to believe there is still a debate.

It’s rare for a striker to boast a Premier League record of 143 goals in 206 games and yet still not be recognised as one of the best.

Sergio Aguero has dealt with this injustice for the past seven years in English football since he joined Man City.

SIGN UP NOW – It’s time to pick your fantasy football team for the new season

AP:Associated Press Name your top five Premier League strikers of all time, does Aguero make it?[/caption]

On the seventh anniversary of his transfer from Atletico Madrid, it’s time we begin to put the 30-year-old in the very top bracket of the Premier League’s best ever strikers.

The Argentine currently sits 12th in the list of the Premier League’s all-time top scorers, with Jermain Defoe the only player still active in the top flight to rank ahead of him.

Aguero became City’s all-time record goalscorer in 2017, despite having his career at the Etihad somewhat written off after the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.

Getty Images - Getty The pair have struggled to co-exist[/caption]

The young Brazilian became Pep Guardiola’s preferred option upfront, and it was soon clear that Aguero was not his manager’s ideal type of striker. His future was uncertain.

Despite frequent praise from Guardiola in public, there was an obvious friction between Aguero’s naturally selfish mentality and his manager’s team philosophy.

Guardiola challenged Aguero to change his game, perhaps sacrificing his hunger for goals to encompass a more team-friendly approach.

When other players might have sulked about having to change a style which had served both him and his club for so long, the striker listened to the advice and his game stepped up a level.

The pair share an interesting dynamic

Aguero’s goalscoring antics were soon to be matched with a new-found work rate to win back possession as well as assist his teammates on a more regular basis.

The striker finished the 2017/18 season with 21 goals to his name and became just the fourth player to score 20+ goals in four consecutive Premier League campaigns after Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Harry Kane.

The ability to adapt and evolve his game is another massive tick next to Aguero’s name and furthers his case to be mentioned amongst the very best.

AFP or licensors The goals don’t stop[/caption]

It took until last season for Aguero to finally be recognised by his peers, as he was voted in the PFA Team of the Year having been snubbed for the past six years.

Injuries at the wrong time of the season have often wrongly blighted his case for the individual end of the season awards.

PA:Press Association Injuries became an all too familiar sight[/caption]

Aguero has two years remaining on his current contract with City and it’s unclear where his long-term future lies.

The Argentine has spoken publicly in the past about wanting to return to his boyhood club Independiente to finish his career.

Surely Aguero has one more big contract left in him before he retires to Argentina.

If his future isn’t to be with City, a plethora of the world’s best clubs would be queuing up to take him.

PA:Press Association Front and centre alongside Vincent Kompany[/caption]

With three Premier League titles to his name, Aguero will go down as a City legend.

It remains to be seen however how he will be remembered by the rest once he leaves these shores.

Oblak expects Real Madrid to replace Ronaldo with another star

Oblak expects Real Madrid to replace Ronaldo with another star
Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is not getting his hopes up about Real Madrid being slack in the transfer market after losing Cristiano Ronaldo, adamant they will bring in a genuine "star" to take his place. Ronaldo's Madrid departure came as something of a shock after Portugal's participation in the World Cup ended, the forward joining Serie A champions Juventus. The Ballon d'Or holder followed Zinedine Zidane out of the club in search of a new challenge after helping them to a third successive Champions League title, the coach leaving because he doubted the team's ability to keep winning after seeing them struggle in LaLiga last term. Madrid ended the domestic season third behind Barcelona and Atletico, and while Ronaldo's departure is a boost to both of their rivals, Oblak is expecting a major signing to be made, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard the most regularly linked. When asked if Ronaldo's sale gives Atletico the upper-hand in their rivalry, Oblak told reporters: "Last season we finished in front of Real Madrid. He's here. He's Bianconero. He's @Cristiano. #CR7JUVE pic.twitter.com/QhvR2X3e26 — JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) July 16, 2018 "Ronaldo is one of the best in history, so Madrid have lost an important player, but I'm sure they will buy another star. "They will always have a great team, so it will be difficult to say [who has the upper-hand] before the season starts. We will have to see how the season goes." Oblak himself was tentatively linked with Liverpool towards the conclusion of last season, though it was swiftly established he has a €100million release clause in his contract, effectively ending the speculation. As such, Alisson became the most expensive goalkeeper in history when the Reds agreed a deal with Roma which could reach €72.5m, and Oblak thinks it is a sign that those between the posts are starting to get noticed. "Before there wasn't much recognition for goalkeepers," Oblak said. "I think the goalkeeper is important in the team. "Everything starts from the back and every position is important. The goalkeepers are getting recognition now."

Mesut Ozil’s agent blasts back at Bayern Munich chief Uli Hoeness after criticism over Germany retirement

Mesut Ozil’s agent blasts back at Bayern Munich chief Uli Hoeness after criticism over Germany retirement

MESUT OZIL’S agent has hit back at Bayern Munich chief Uli Hoeness for his personal attack on the Arsenal star following his retirement from international football.

Ozil pencilled an emotional statement announcing his decision to stop playing for Germany following the side’s poor performances at the World Cup.

The ex-Real Madrid star accused some within the German game of racism over his treatment in the wake of a controversial meeting with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

But Bayern president Hoeness ignored the important point the 29-year-old was making to instead wade in with a personal attack on the playmaker’s performances – as though that was all that was important.

And Ozil’s agent Dr Erkut Sogut has responded with a stinging rebuke of Hoeness, who spent almost two years in prison after being found guilty of £25million in tax evasion in 2014.

Sogut said: “The comments of Mr Hoeness miss the point completely, as they have absolutely nothing to do with football.

“He is trying to divert attention away from the real issue, the issue of racism and discrimination in Germany, which is resurging once again within everyday German society.

“As Mesut said in his statement, he accepts reasonable and fair criticism of his football, and deals with that as part of the job.

“However, Mr Hoeness cannot even provide any actual evidence to back up his foolish statements that are clearly exaggerated. In this case, the stats are clear.

“Twenty-three goals, 40 assists – which is a German record – and five-time German player of the year – three of which come after 2014.

“He claims that Mesut has been a ‘ghost’ for years, but what ‘ghost’ wins all these awards and has this much success?

“Mesut created more chances in the 2018 World Cup per 90 minutes than any other player, but, of course, he singles him out for criticism.

“As the president of Bayern Munich is it not best to focus on the performance of his own players seeing as eight of the Germany team play for the club.

“If Mesut is such a bad player, what does this say about his opinion on Joachim Low, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho?

“These are three elite managers who praise Mesut as one of the best in his position. It is laughable that he thinks he is more qualified to judge footballing abilities than these people, with fabricated statistics.

“It is obvious that his comment about Mesut not making any tackles is completely made up and false.

“But, just so everyone knows, in both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Euros, Mesut won over 65 per cent of duels per game, moreover he was the most important player in the games against France and Italy in 2016, again making a complete mockery of his ludicrous comments.

“The facts speak for themselves and anyway who is he to speak about Mesut in this way? These lies are cheap, stereotypical and baseless comments – made without any foundations – that allow hurtful news to spread.

“Mr Hoeness, we will not waste any more time or energy talking about a subject clearly you know nothing about.

“Not only is he a disgrace to himself, but also and more importantly a shame to German football and the people of Germany.”

The Montreal Impact have announced that forward Jimmy Briand will arrive this week to complete his signing from Guingamp.

— Impact de Montréal (@impactmontreal) July 23, 2018

Guingamp also confirmed the transfer earlier on Sunday.

Briand, 32, can play on the left wing or as a striker, which will allow head coach Remi Garde to deploy the Frenchman in various roles.

Briand and Garde worked together at Lyon from 2011 to 2014, where the forward scored 22 goals in 110 league appearances.

Most recently, Briand captained Guingamp while scoring 32 times in 118 games across all competitions. He started his professional career at Rennes, contributing 33 goals in 169 matches.

The Impact had freed up a spot after trading Raheem Edwards to the Chicago Fire in exchange for targeted allocation money earlier this week. Those funds likely allowed Montreal to complete the deal.

With Anthony Jackson-Hamel and Matteo Mancosu combining for just four goals this season, Briand might end up claiming the No. 9 role as soon as he gains match fitness.

Montreal is currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference on 28 points. However, only D.C. United and the Columbus Crew have scored fewer goals than the Impact’s 28 among all teams in the East.

Jonathan Osorio scores winner as Toronto FC beats Chicago

Jonathan Osorio scores winner as Toronto FC beats Chicago

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Jonathan Osorio was the difference maker, again, for Toronto FC.

Osorio broke a tie in the 65th minute and Toronto held on to beat the Chicago Fire 2-1 on Saturday night to halt a six-match MLS winless streak.

The Canadian midfielder also scored the only goal Wednesday in the Reds’ 1-0 road win over the Ottawa Fury in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinal.

"He has played virtually minute. He keeps finding the back of the net but as much as finding the back of the net, he’s doing an immense amount of work on both sides of the ball, defensively, attacking, covering tons of ground, helping us in possession. He’s been excellent," said TFC head coach Greg Vanney.

Osorio helped Toronto FC (5-11-4) regain the lead it gave away three minutes earlier, easily tucking it home after goalkeeper Richard Sanchez misplayed Marco Delgado’s through ball.

"Right now with the confidence he has, he has a good feel for getting in good spots and finishing off goals," added Vanney. "There’s not much more you can say, he’s having a huge season and we want him just to keep going."

Toronto, which has dealt with injuries for much of what’s turned into a disappointing season, last scored an MLS victory back on June 8, a 2-0 win over Philadelphia.

Both Jozy Altidore, who last played in April, and Victor Vazquez returned from injury on Saturday.

"We are kicking on, man. We have a lot of injuries but we are having guys get back now to help out the team," said Altidore.

"A lot of these guys have played a lot of minutes and we were able to get a result tonight with guys coming back to get some minutes and now we’re looking ahead."

Nemanja Nikolic tied it 1-1 for the Fire (6-11-5) in the 62nd minute. Raheem Edwards flicked Aleksandar Katai’s free kick back across goal and Nikolic headed it home from close range.

Sebastian Giovinco settled Michael Bradley’s long ball and dribbled to the centre of the area where he powered home a right-footed finish in the 47th minute for the game’s opening goal.

TFC began the evening 11 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We are starting to look a little more in general like ourselves, as a team. Good organization. It was good. They’re all good wins, they all feel important and we’ll take it," said Vanney.

Nikola Kalinic refuses World Cup runners-up medal following his dramatic exit from the Croatian camp

CROATIA may have sensationally secured a silver medal at the World Cup in Russia, but there’s one member of their team who turned down the silverware.

Nikola Kalinic has admitted that he doesn’t deserve the runners-up medal after his dramatic exit from the tournament.

Kalinic was awarded a silver medal, despite not playing a minute during the tournament- but the striker refused to accept itGetty - Contributor Kalinic was awarded a silver medal, despite not playing a minute during the tournament- but the striker refused to accept it[/caption]

Graciously, Kalinic’s team-mates and back-room staff awarded the 30-year-old with the medal despite him not even featuring during the tournament.

The Croatian striker and head coach Zlatko Dalic entered into an argument on the touchline during their side’s opening match of the World Cup.

Which was reportedly over the striker’s reluctance to come on as a substitute against Nigeria- he was subsequently sent packing.

The AC Milan player is reported by Sportske Novosti to have said: “Thanks for the medal, but I did not play in Russia.”

Kalinic’s refusal to come on as a substitute was put down to a back injury, despite the fact that the striker had already been warming up in the second half.

Head coach Dalic eventually lost patience with the ex-Blackburn player having experienced a similar disagreement with him in a training session and in a World Cup warm-up game against Brazil.

The dramatic end to the Croatian’s World Cup campaign reportedly started over his frustration at finding himself warming the bench for the fourth successive international fixture.

Lack of game time during the World Cup and a well-publicised exit could well impact Kalinic’s future with AC Milan.

Kalinic's departure from the World Cup, left Croatia with just one striker option- but they managed pretty well without himEPA Kalinic’s departure from the World Cup, left Croatia with just one striker option- but they managed pretty well without him[/caption]

The national side managed an impressive campaign without Kalinic and created history by reaching their county’s first ever final.

They came out on top of Group D, before defeating both Denmark and Russia on penalties.

Croatia then ended Gareth Southgate’s dreams of a World Cup final by beating England 2-1 in extra time.

They then came up against a formidable French side and lost 4-2 in a thrilling final, in Moscow.

Criticism is a weapon of the weak – Dani Alves defends Neymar
Dani Alves thinks Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Neymar was harshly judged during the World Cup and has blasted those who criticised him as "weak". Neymar had a race against time to be ready for the finals after breaking his foot in February, an injury which initially looked likely to rule him out. He managed to return to fitness before the big kick-off and soaked up the attention in Russia, but not always for good reasons, as he was frequently ridiculed for his theatrics and behaviour on the pitch. Neymar's underwhelming performance as Brazil were eliminated by Belgium in the quarter-finals made matters worse, but Alves thinks the criticism was exaggerated. "I think so [it was over the top]," Alves told reporters at an auction and gala hosted by Neymar. 9 - Most chances created for a specific teammate at the 2018 #WorldCup 9 - Neymar to Coutinho 7 - Kieran Trippier to Harry Maguire 6 - Kevin De Bruyne to Eden Hazard Partnerships. pic.twitter.com/92O6eRyQfZ — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) July 15, 2018 "Everything Neymar does turns into news. "We have to focus on the things that make us mature and that help us become a real man. The rest is only silly things. "I wish everyone who talked about Neymar would do things like he does here [the auction event]. "Criticising is a weapon of the weak. I believe that we football players always strive to do the best for the group and for our team-mates. "Those who know Neymar know his great quality and how special he is. And I insist again, we have to take care of players like that, they illuminate football. It's players like him that make football have any sense. "But as I said, criticising Neymar and players of that level is easy; what's difficult is to do what they do."

Alderweireld hints at Tottenham departure
Toby Alderweireld cast doubt over his future at Tottenham after describing the club's decision not to utilise him towards the end of 2017-18 as "unjustified". The Belgium international started six of his country's games at the World Cup after playing just 14 times for Spurs in the Premier League last season, and he said he was glad to have proved his form and fitness in Russia. A hamstring injury kept the 29-year-old out of Mauricio Pochettino's plans for part of last season, but Alderweireld told Nieuwsblad he was disappointed not to have been more involved in the club's charge to third place in the table. Reflecting on his part in Belgium's run to the World Cup semi-finals, he said: "I'm glad I was able to prove myself here again. Belgium, we wanted it so bad. We did everything we could. A big thank you to all our fans for the incredible support. I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play – for whatever reason – was unjustified. "I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November. "I was happy that I could still play four or five matches for the World Cup. I immediately had a good feeling. "Physically there was no problem, because it was just my only major injury from my career. I spent only three or four months [injured] in my entire career. "I have to touch wood, but I cannot complain about that. I'm glad I could come back in this way." The defender has two years left on his current Tottenham contract, with Manchester United reportedly interested in signing him should he choose to look elsewhere for first-team football. When asked about his prospects for the new season, Alderweireld gave no assurances that his future lies in north London. "I really do not know anything yet. In my head I just go to Tottenham. We will see," he said.

Casillas and Suarez critical of VAR after World Cup final
Spain legend Iker Casillas and Barcelona forward Luis Suarez have criticised VAR following its controversial use in Sunday's World Cup final. France were given a contentious free-kick against that led to their first goal, and were later awarded a penalty for an Ivan Perisic handball that Croatia argued was not deliberate. Referring to the first incident, Casillas - world champion in 2010 - said on Twitter: ''Honestly, I do not understand the use of VAR very well. The referee points out a foul that is not on Griezmann. Goal to France in that action. Nothing happens.'' Suarez, whose Uruguay side were knocked out by France in the quarter-finals, replied to Casillas saying: ''You are right Iker, and apart from that Pogba's offside and "participates" in the play.'' We're 'blessed' to watch Mbappe, says Kaka
Former Brazil star Kaka hailed Kylian Mbappe for his maturity and said fans were "blessed" to see the France teenager at the World Cup. Mbappe, 19, has impressed throughout the showpiece tournament in Russia, scoring three goals in six games to help his nation into Sunday's final against Croatia. Kaka – who made 92 appearances for Brazil during his career – lauded the Paris Saint-Germain attacker for his performances. "I think the best thing we can say about him is his speed, and how quickly he can run," Kaka, speaking courtesy of Adidas, told Omnisport. "Of course he's not just running because he has very good control when he is running. "And he is also just 19 years old, but he sometimes seems like he is 35 years old – very mature, controls the game, [makes] good choices. "I think he's got a very, very good future and to see a 19-year old player playing and performing like he is performing at this World Cup – we are blessed to see something like that." Mbappe will look to guide France to a second World Cup title when they face Croatia in the decider in Moscow.

We arranged a five-a-side match in Moscow to sort out Anglo-Russian relations for good

We arranged a five-a-side match in Moscow to sort out Anglo-Russian relations for good

As the dust begins to settle on what has been an incredible World Cup, life will return to the madness that we now consider normal.

And with so much talk before the tournament in Russia being dominated by geo-political issues and threats of hooliganism, we thought we would stretch out our olive branch in the only way we know how – having a good old kickabout in a local Moscow park.

The task? Organise a game with some locals, see what they were like at football… and sort out Anglo-Russian tensions for good.

The method? Instagram, mainly. A few messages fired from the Dream Team Instagram account here, a couple from personal accounts there, and boom! A reply from our newest friend Pavel, promising us a group of lads willing to be ambassadors for their country.

We were to meet at a neutral venue – a spongy, rubbery, uneven five-a-side pitch near Novokuznetskaya in the centre of Moscow was perfect.

A kick-off time was arranged, and because it’s still the World Cup, 4pm on a Tuesday afternoon just seems normal now, doesn’t it?

Oh, and Sky News came down, probably because the state the world is currently in, we’d do probably as useful a job as a representative of the UK than our current government, whatever’s left of it.

In a first step of diplomacy, the Russian lads decided we could both be captains, which was very in keeping with the old school vibe of it all.

I took it one step further by picking players based entirely on their shorts – I’ll pick you, with the England shorts, then you, with the United shorts.

We kick off, and the tempo was mercifully slower than I’d anticipated – after four weeks of beer and burgers, we’d have lasted five minutes ordinarily, but we steadily worked ourselves into the game and before long a couple of goals had gone in each end.

Our first discovery in this match was that it’s not just football that is a universal language, it’s the little parts of the game that really unite us all.

Someone gets hit in the nuts by a shot? Everyone laughs. The ball goes over the fence? Yep, that’ll be five minutes before it comes back, following a debate about who should go round and get it.

This game did have a unique moment of someone digging out a ladder to try and scale the wall to save time – alas, the ladder was about five feet too short.

The second discovery is that even to young Russia lads, a nutmeg will be met with whoops and cheers as much as a goal. The victim of this savagery? Yours truly, thank you.

Half an hour in and the legs are starting to flag, but the game maintains a decent standard and competitiveness.

Migrant workers, apparently from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, sit on the sidelines watching alongside a couple of skaters draining a tinny.

The game wears on, and with my team trailing 7-5, a score of ‘first to 10’ is loosely agreed – this is a kickaround in the park after all, so it must finish at that number.

A brief show of resistance occurs, but eventually the game ends 10-8, two hours after kick-off. Forgetting to bring a bottle of water before the game was a grave error, but a post-match game of crossbar challenge is soon underway and it’d be rude not to chip a couple onto the woodwork.

Then comes the true diplomacy.

“I didn’t take anything in the media before the World Cup seriously – it’s all politics,” Pavel tells me.

He continues: “I think that normal people don’t care about these stereotypes and understand that we are all the same people and all countries have their own problems – nobody’s perfect.

“Everyone who came to this World Cup has been great because they came here to enjoy the celebration and I just think, why can’t we just party, have a nice time with each other and forget about all this stuff?”

I steer conversation onto the tensions Russia has had between Britain in the build up to the tournament.

“The problems between the two countries are not huge,” says Alexei.

“It’s true, I’ve seen both sides as well,” agrees Maksim, a Moscovite currently studying in London.

“I enjoy listening to the news and it’s good to compare it – from the British side, there is big propaganda about Putin and saying he’s a dictator or something.

“Then you come here to Moscow and you can ask anybody in the streets, they are going to say that Putin is not a dictator, and he’s not saying that you have to do anything.”

You don’t hear this sort of thing down at your local Powerleague in England, that’s for sure.

As for the World Cup as a whole? It may be a bit biased to ask a group of young football fans, but the verdict is unanimous.

“I think our country has changed dramatically during the World Cup,” says Alexei.

“Everyone was out on the streets,  partying with the other countries and it’s been good for bringing all the nations together, so we can make new friends. It’s been a great experience.”

It does come with a word of warning about what comes next in the country, however.

“After the World Cup every football fan is praying for clubs to lower the ticket prices for fans who really want to support the team can attend the football games and fill the stadiums, as they have been during the past month,” says Maksim.

Having seen the new stadiums around the country over the past month, I can’t help but feel filling stadiums is going to be a big ask in places like Kaliningrad and Samara.

The past month has reminded us all that football truly is mankind’s greatest invention.

And on a small, spongy five-a-side pitch in central Moscow, we’re reminded of this very fact. Ten lads, connected through social media, having a kickabout and realising that while politics is politics, there’s nothing else on Earth that will bring people together quite like the beautiful game.

FIFA should refrain from World Cup tinkering after sensational Russia spectacle

FIFA should refrain from World Cup tinkering after sensational Russia spectacle
The saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. It's a phrase that has become particularly pertinent over the last month as a brilliantly bonkers World Cup has played out in front of the eyes of the globe in Russia. For all the controversy and rigmarole that surrounded the voting outcome of this tournament and Qatar 2022, there can be no denying that the end product has been a glorious cocktail of drama, excitement, surprise and, it wouldn't be football without it, heartbreak.  Big guns like Germany, Spain, Brazil and Argentina were disarmed, hosts Russia defied the odds to reach the quarter-finals, Croatia are shaking off the dark horse tag and England dared to believe it was coming home.  Messi and Ronaldo went home with their Ballon d'Or tails tucked between their legs, Kylian Mbappe has enhanced his reputation as a future great and Luka Modric has come to the fore to show his standing as arguably the best central midfielder on the planet right now. All of this begs the question, why tinker with a product that continues to produce such scarcely-believable moments of drama? #FRA #CRO We now know our FIFA #WorldCupFinal teams... Relive a dramatic couple of days of football here https://t.co/k5MLy2J4F9 pic.twitter.com/dXMhXep6EB — FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) July 12, 2018 From 2026, FIFA president Gianni Infantino will get his wish when football's global showpiece will encompass 48 nations. Infantino's argument is that by growing the tournament, which has had 32 teams since 1998, football will be boosted worldwide. The sceptics probably wonder whether the estimated $1billion extra FIFA can expect in additional revenue is actually a much more prominent factor. Whatever the reasoning, the point remains that the current system is beautifully simplistic, easy to follow and encourages lesser-celebrated nations to take it to the established order of international football. Iran and Morocco are prime examples of the case in question. Drawn in a group alongside heavyweights Spain and Portugal, given next to no chance of getting out of the group and yet only a lack of luck and hardened knowhow denied them a famous scalp. Did anyone truly foresee Germany failing to get out of a pool including Sweden, South Korea and Mexico? The reigning world champions falling at the first hurdle for the third straight World Cup. And the reason we have again been treated to such a stunning tournament is because the format allows it. There is nothing to lose, everything to gain and plenty of reward for endeavour.  If proof were needed that expansion is not the answer you need look back no further than Euro 2016 when 16 teams became 24. The risk-reward balance shifted to the dark side. Finishing third was, in some cases, enough to reach the knockout stages and meant caution was the ultimate winner. It led to turgid encounters, bore draws, and teams shutting up shop because the fear of conceding when trying to nick a winner outweighed the desire to take it to the man. There is the argument put forward by some that opening FIFA's doors wider will lead to more of the feelgood stories like the joyous celebrations that met Panama's shock qualification. But the reason those scenes are so memorable, so emotive, so instantly viral in this social-media age is because of the fact it is such a monumental achievement to qualify for a 32-team World Cup. By expanding the format the stories are diminished, the achievements not as grand and, if we're being brutally honest, as great as Panama's qualification was – and it was a truly special moment – they were hardly the greatest advert for expansion. "If we can say that the World Cup was so successful, it is because of these guys!"@TheRealSalgado, @J_Baptista81 and @fatma_samoura were amongst those praising the FIFA #WorldCup Volunteers for their amazing contribution to the tournament! It should showcase the globe's best players and teams, whether that be France, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, China, wherever, it doesn't matter so long as the best is on show. To be a great entertainer you should always leave them wanting more. Russia 2018 will leave us all wanting more, counting down the days until Qatar in three-and-a-half-years time. Undoubtedly the World Cup isn't broken. FIFA should stop trying to fix it.
