Iker Casillas has revealed his regret at not confronting Jose Mourinho during the pair's fractious relationship at Real Madrid. Mourinho spent three years in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu between 2010 and 2013, a period which delivered one league title and one Copa del Rey. Italy nets stoppage time goal to beat United States

In his final match as U.S. soccer coach, Dave Sarachan gave Christian Pulisic the captain’s arm band for the first time and sent out the youngest lineup since the American team started keeping records.

Matteo Politano scored his first international goal in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, and Italy beat the United States 1-0 in an exhibition Tuesday night at Genk, Belgium, as Pulisic became the youngest captain since the American team’s records began in 1990.

Pulisic was the only holdover in the U.S. starting lineup from last Thursday’s 3-0 loss at England. At 20 years, 63 days, Pulisic bettered Landon Donovan, who was 22 years, 220 days when he first captained the Americans in a World Cup qualifier at El Salvador on Oct. 9, 2004, a match regular captain Claudio Reyna missed because of a quadriceps injury.

"It’s a huge honour. For the coaches, the staff, the team to trust me to be captain of the team, it means everything," Pulisic said. "I was never a captain in my life and now to be for the United States men’s national team, it’s an incredible honour. It doesn’t matter what age you are. I will never forget this moment."

Before last week, Pulisic had played just once for the U.S. since the October 2017 defeat at Trinidad and Tobago that ended the Americans’ streak of seven straight World Cup appearances. He missed some games because of minor injuries, others to concentrate on his club career with Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Coach Bruce Arena quit after the loss in Trinidad and was replaced on an interim basis by Sarachan, his top assistant. As the U.S. Soccer Federation restructured under new president Carlos Cordeiro, Sarachan transitioned to a younger roster and guided the Americans to three wins, five losses and four ties in 12 exhibitions.

"Well, it was my last game. I haven’t been told that, but it’s evident there’s going to be a change in the very near future," Sarachan said. "To look back on the games that we played, the players that we’ve exposed to this level, that we brought forth, I’m certain it’s going to pay dividends down the line. So for me I feel as though when the next person comes in, they’re going to have a great starting point and that makes me feel good."

Pulisic was moved from wide midfield to forward in a 3-5-2 formation against Italy. The new coach will face the issue of where to deploy Pulisic, who usually is wide for Dortmund.

Romain Gall, a 23-year-old midfielder, replaced Pulisic in the 83rd minute and became the 23rd player to make his debut under Sarachan. New U.S. general manager Earnie Stewart has said a new coach will be hired later this year, and Columbus Crew coach Gregg Berhalter is the favourite. The new coach will take over for a January training camp followed by a pair of friendlies, and his first competitive matches will be next June at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

"In a lot of ways with the interim role, it’s a difficult space to navigate, and I think he did it extremely well," midfielder Wil Trapp said of the 64-year-old Sarachan. "He could have mailed it in in a lot of ways but he didn’t do that one bit. He did all of us as a players a real service."

Nine of the 11 U.S. starters were 23 or younger, and the lineup’s average age of 22 years, 71 days was an American record low, besting the 22-160 against Bolivia on May 28.

Ethan Horvath, a 23-year-old goalkeeper on his home field for Club Brugge, made his third international appearance and first since last November at Portugal. He had five saves before the goal by Politano, a 25-year-old winger playing his second match for the Azzurri.

Politano passed to Marco Verratti about 25 yards above the penalty arc and sprinted through the penalty area. Roberto Gagliardini beat defender Aaron Long to Verratti’s feed into the area and poked the ball ahead to the onrushing Politano, who cut past Jorge Villafana, touched the ball from his left foot to his right and beat Horvath from 8 yards. The goal with about 25 seconds left capped a buildup that included a dozen passes.

"I’m kind of disappointed with the late goal, but on the other side I think I can be proud of how I performed tonight," said Horvath, who in the last month has gotten regular club playing time for the first stretch this season. "The past year has not been easy. And all I can do is believe in myself and believe what I’m doing each day is the correct thing."

Notes: The U.S. will play Costa Rica in an exhibition on Feb. 2 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California. … The U.S. finished with three wins, five losses and three draws in 2018, its fewest games in a year since going 1-2 in 1987, all that June at the President’s Cup in South Korea. The Americans have one win and three draws in 12 matches against Italy.

Even though Alphonso Davies doesn’t officially join Bayern Munich until January, he will be heading to Munich for an orientation of sorts before the end of the year.

Davies revealed that he will spend a few weeks training with Bayern leading up to Christmas. He will then return home to Edmonton for the holidays before heading back to Munich where he’ll hope to make his official debut with the club in 2019.

Davies is now eligible to train with Bayern as he turned 18 years old on Nov. 2.

The Canadian international became the most expensive outgoing transfer in MLS history after signing a contract with Bayern until 2023 back in July. He spent three seasons with the Vancouver Whitecaps, posting eight goals and 12 assists in 65 regular-season games.

That’s all the more strange considering he’s been particularly brilliant recently, picking up 26 points in his last three outings alone.

Netting seven goals in all competitions this season – including the opener in their win over Man United last weekend – Silva has proven once again to be City’s creative hub.

In fact, his in-game influence has been all the more important this term as Kevin De Bruyne remains out of the side through injury.

With KDB on the sidelines, we figured Silva – who is valued at £5.7m right now – would be the obvious choice as his fantasy football replacement.

But instead, we’ve seen the likes of Paul Pogba (17.9%), Willian (16.2%) and Bernardo Silva (11.7%) chosen ahead of him, despite Silva’s haul of 91 points being better than all three – and the fourth-best on the game overall.

We really do think it’s time to start seriously considering Silva for your midfield.

After all, City have already ticked off some of their big fixtures this season, including the away trip to Liverpool in October and the always tricky Manchester derby.

That means their next few fixtures are relatively favourable, including their trip to West Ham next week.

The 18-year-old versatile Fulham winger grew up in Roehampton, London, where he first started to kick a ball around.

Sessegnon, speaking to Ian Wright as part of Dream Team’s Wrighty Meets series, explained: “We’d play older kids from the block and the area.

“I was about 11 or 12 when I started, playing against bigger players. There was a football cage next to my house where we used to meet up and play all night.

“All night until we couldn’t really see. There was a street light outside but it was broken.

“We used to play 10v10s or 11v11s. We used to play World Cup where you’re by yourself and you have to score a certain number of goals to go through.

“I used to go to the cage with my brother Steven. Both of us would play one-touch and two-touch and ping the ball at each other.

“In my head I used to always think football is what I want to do as a career. But I never thought that four years later I would be playing a Championship game, making my debut for Fulham.”

Those hours of cage football certainly did the job, with both Ryan and Steven going on to sign professional terms before representing Fulham’s first-team.

It’s no surprise that England’s latest crop of youngsters, whether it be Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson out in Germany or Phil Foden and Sessegnon in England, all thrive in small spaces.

Cage football has been credited with playing a major role in the careers of Wilfried Zaha, arguably the Premier League’s best dribbler, and Chelsea’s Victor Moses.

So next time you’re in the cage playing Wembley Doubles, just remember that you’re in good company.

But the panel deciding on the ‘Guldbollen’ this year also cited his performances for club side Manchester United over the course of 2018.

He initially struggled at Old Trafford following his £31million move from Benfica in 2017 but has established himself as a first-team regular in recent weeks.

Lindelof and Chris Smalling have started the last six United games together and although they have not kept a clean sheet, the partnership is certainly strengthening.

And many would have expected the fellow centre-back, 33, to take home the award again yesterday.

Not only did he captain Sweden to the last eight of the World Cup, their best finish for 24 years, but he also scored two crucial goals on the way.

He slotted home a penalty in the 1-0 win over South Korea and repeated the feat again as the Swedes saw off Mexico 3-0 to top Group F.

AC Milan have added another name to a growing list of injuries, confirming defender Mateo Musacchio will be out for up to two months. Musacchio suffered a heavy fall after colliding with teammate Franck Kessie during Milan's 1-1 draw with Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday. There were panicked calls from Musacchio's teammates for the medical staff as he appeared to be unconscious - the back of his head hitting the ground. However, it is a knee problem that threatens to rule the player out for the remainder of 2018. A Milan statement revealed Musacchio "reported a trauma to his right knee that involved a lesion of the posterior cruciate ligament, an injury that will require 6 to 8 weeks conservative treatment." The statement also confirmed examinations to the head trauma "have been completed with negative results". Up until last Sunday's win against Udinese, the Argentine defender played every minute in Serie A this season for Milan. He now joins Lucas Biglia and Mattia Caldara, who are unavailable until 2019, on the sidelines while Ivan Strinic is out indefinitely with a heart condition. Furthermore, key players in Giacomo Bonaventura and Gonzalo Higuain have also missed recent fixtures. Currently fourth in Serie A, the Rossoneri will host league-leading Juventus on Sunday.

And considering their leading 2-0 at half-time, things are looking pretty good for them.

But their second goal will go down as one of the more controversial moments in Europe this season.

On the 24th minute, Raheem Sterling was racing into the opposition box when he managed to get his feet all in a muddle.

Tripping on the turf, the England winger fell to the floor in dramatic style, with Shakhtar right-back Mykola Matviyenko the closest man to him.

But it seems the referee thought Matviyenko somehow clipped Sterling, as he instantly awarded a penalty to City.

Honestly, it’s one of the most ridiculous – but hilarious – refereeing calls we’ve seen for a while.

Even Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov saw the funny side, and could be seen laughing his head off at the decision.

When play resumed, Gabriel Jesus stepped up to take the spot-kick, sending Pyatov the wrong way to net his first goal since September. He looked mightily relieved.

We should add that Sterling certainly didn’t dive, as he simply kicked the turf when he meant to kick the ball.

An embarrassing moment, for both Sterling and the referee.
