Sergio Aguero, Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany injury updates ahead of Man City vs Lyon

PEP GUARDIOLA is hopeful Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany will be fit for Manchester City’s Champions League opener against Lyon on Wednesday.

The Premier League champions are the favourites to lift the trophy in May and end Real Madrid’s recent domination.

And Guardiola may have some of his star players available for the French side’s visit to the Etihad this week despite injury concerns.

Aguero came off after 54 minutes in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Fulham with an ankle problem and underwent an assessment yesterday.

Guardiola said: “It was something in the ankle. He went up to head a cross and when he fell down, he felt something.

“He finished the first half and started the second half a bit uncomfortable.

“He could have played on but with us winning 3-0, we did not want to take a risk. We will see (if he can play on Wednesday).”

The news surrounding Kompany is even more positive, with the Spanish manager confirming the club captain’s absence for this weekend’s victory was “just my decision” and therefore should be fit to face Lyon.

But it doesn’t look like Mendy will be playing on Wednesday night.

The left-back, who missed the majority of last season through injury, did not play against Fulham due to a knee problem and Guardiola was unsure on when the Manchester City star will return.

Fabien Delph came in at left-back for his first appearance of the season for the champions.

Guardiola said: “I don’t know how many days he’ll be out for.

“No doubts about Delph.

“We know how important he was last season and now with the Mendy injury – it could be weeks or days and maybe longer, having Fabian fit is so important.”
