Juan Foyth’s Premier League debut was an absolute nightmare

Juan Foyth’s Premier League debut was an absolute nightmare

Juan Foyth certainly won’t forget his Premier League debut in a hurry.

And neither will Spurs fans, after the young defender gave away TWO penalties in the second-half of their Saturday night clash against Wolves.

Goals from Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a resounding 3-0 lead after 60 minutes.

But a late rally from the home side certainly did nothing for the nerves of your Spurs-supporting mates.

Sadly, the history books will not be kind on 20-year-old Foyth.

On his Premier League debut, the Argentinian looked more-or-less assured in defence alongside Toby Alderweireld.

But as Wolves chased the game in the final half an hour, his lack of experience was plain to see.

On 68th minute, as Wolves looked to attack Spurs’ tiring back-line, Foyth clipped Raul Jimenez inside the penalty area after a defensive disaster from Kieran Trippier, who lost the ball when he tried to nutmeg Leo Bonatini (for reasons we don’t quite understand).

Ruben Neves stepped up to take the penalty – Wolves’ first spot-kick since their return to the top-flight – and slotted it home confidently past Hugo Lloris.

But then, only 10 minutes later, Foyth was at fault again, this time failing to deal with the pace of Jonny.

As the Spanish wing-back surged forward, Foyth clumsily grabbed hold of his back and pulled him to the floor.

Referee Mike Dean simply had no choice but to point to the spot once again and this time it was Jimenez who stepped up to fire home.

2 – Juan Foyth is the first player to concede two penalties in the same Premier League game since Phil Jagielka against Manchester City in October 2016. Clumsy.

Suddenly, with the score reduced to 3-2, the final few minutes were rather nervy for Pochettino’s side. But hopefully, he won’t be too hard on his young centre-back.

Considering his inexperience in the Premier League and the ruthlessness of Wolves’ attacking play in the second-half, we’re willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

After all, in English football; you learn early and you learn hard.
